We set out on a six week quest to harness the Semantic Web to find insight by compiling and combining our enterprise data from disparate systems. We aspired to convert single points of data with limited individual value into a collective database where semantically linked information could provide more power. We set out on a six week quest to harness the Semantic Web; to find insight by compiling and combining our enterprise data from disparate systems, and we aspired to convert single points of data with limited individual value into a collective database where semantically linked information could provide more power. The catch was that we hadn't a clue where to begin, only six weeks to complete the mission, and no budget. This is the story of our journey, which we believed at the outset was unlikely to be successful, but pursued anyway, in order to learn, and then to be able to use what we learned in different ways.

Christine Connors is the principal of a TriviumRLG, an information consulting firm based in Pennsylvania. Ms. Connors has extensive experience in taxonomy, ontology and metadata design and development. Prior to forming TrivimRLG Ms. Connors was the global director, semantic technology solutions for Dow Jones, responsible for partnering with business champions across Dow Jones to improve digital asset management and delivery. Prior to joining Dow Jones Ms. Connors was a knowledge architect at Intuit, where she was responsible for introducing semantic technologies to online content management and search. At Raytheon Company she oversaw knowledge representation and enterprise search, delivering large-scale taxonomies, metadata schema and rules-based classification to improve retrieval of internal information via a multi-vendor retrieval platform. Ms. Connors holds a master of science degree in Library and Information Services from Simmons College, Boston, and a bachelor of science degree in Theatre Arts Management from Ithaca College, New York.

Kevin Lynch? is an IT Fellow for Raytheon where he focuses on semantic infrastructure for netcentric applications, collaboration, and enterprise search. Prior to Raytheon, Kevin was the project manager and database architect for COPLINK, a novel data warehousing project integrating law enforcement databases for intelligence sharing.
