This introductory session will provide an overview of data governance, its purpose, and how it can be implemented quickly in any organization. The attendees will gain an understanding of the importance of data governance, the foundations of a data governance program, the data steward’s function and the steps needed to implement an iterative governance and stewardship program. The session will provide proven approaches to the lean, iterative implementation of a data stewardship and governance program. Attendees will learn about the importance of a specific plan for implementing your own governance and stewardship program and the organizational structures and roles that are essential to a successful governance/stewardship program.
  • Fundamentals of data governance and stewardship
  • How to develop an effective plan for managing expanding information requirements iteratively
  • How to address the political issues and organizational challenges of data governance and stewardship
  • The importance of data governance to the enterprise and the ways to create and sustain the data stewardship function without disruption


Anne Marie Smith, Ph.D. is a highly acclaimed professional, author and speaker in the fields of data stewardship and governance, data warehousing, data modeling, project management, IS strategic planning and metadata management. She holds a doctorate in Management Information Systems, and is a certified data management professional (CDMP) and project management professional (PM). Anne Marie has been a consultant in data management for organizations across many industries and she has taught at LaSalle University’s and Rowan University’s Management Information Systems departments. Anne Marie serves on the board of directors of DAMA International and is on the faculty of Northcentral University. She is Editor-in-Chief of Real World Decision Support, and a columnist for the EIM Insight journal. Anne Marie is the Director of Enterprise Information Management at 21st Century Insurance, a Farmers’ Insurance company.
